Parent Sanctuary – Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

We know that starting something new can feel a little daunting — whether it’s joining a family walk in Huddersfield, trying out babywearing for the first time, or exploring forest school activities with your toddler. Below are some of the most common questions about our sling library, family walks, and forest school sessions.

If your question isn’t answered here, please get in touch — we’ll be happy to help.

Sling Library FAQs

Are the sling library sessions still running?

Yes! Our sling library sessions run regularly, although the exact venue may change depending on funding and room availability. You’ll always find current dates and times listed on our sessions page.

We currently offer baby carrier support in Holmfirth, Penistone, and across Kirklees, with future plans to expand into Barnsley and Calderdale.

Do I need to book?

No booking is needed — you can just drop in. You’re welcome to come along to chat, observe, or get hands-on help with your baby carrier.

If you have any specific requirements, it’s good to message beforehand. For example, if there’s a specific carrier you want to try or if you have any concerns – we’re happy to help!

What can I expect at a session?

At each babywearing support session, you can:

  • Get help with your own sling or carrier
  • Try or hire one of ours (£8.50–£12.50 for 4 weeks)
  • Ask questions in a calm, friendly space
  • Feed, change, or settle your baby whenever needed

Teaching is usually in small groups based on your baby’s age or stage, and our trained team is on hand to offer practical and emotional support.

How much does it cost?

Our sling library services are free or donation-based so everyone can access safe, comfortable carrying. Most families give between £5–£20.

Carrier hire is £8.50–£12.50 for 4 weeks. We do offer some deals/discounts over Christmas or Summer Holidays – check out our socials for more information!

What if I need extra support (e.g. twins, disability, or unique needs)?

We aim to make babywearing accessible for all families. Some situations are best supported through a private home visit, where we can tailor teaching to your needs. Please contact us to discuss what would work best for you.

Do you offer private sling consultations?

Yes. Private consultations cost £50 for up to 2 hours plus mileage (45p per mile, return, from HD8). These one-to-one sessions allow more time to explore different baby carriers, adaptive babywearing options, and comfort adjustments at your own pace.

When is the best time to visit — before or after baby arrives?

Both options are great!

  • During pregnancy, you can visit to look around, ease nerves, and practice with a demo doll.
  • After baby arrives, you might want to find a sling that helps you manage day-to-day life.

Many parents tell us the sling library helped them feel confident, calm, and more connected to their baby.

Which areas do you cover?

We support families across Kirklees, Calderdale, Penistone, and parts of Barnsley. If you’re outside these areas, we can signpost you to trusted babywearing consultants or community sling libraries near you.

Family Walk FAQs

When and where do walks take place?

Our family walks run weekly in Huddersfield, Kirklees, and surrounding areas, including Greenhead Park and other local nature spots. Full details are on our sessions page.

We also have a map of all of our walk locations on our contact page – so you can find ones that are close to you.

Do I need to book?

Yes, please book online — it helps us manage group sizes and make sure we have enough space for everyone. It also helps us to have your contact details so we can give you a call if you’re running late or lost – we know what it’s like having small children!

What happens on a Parent Sanctuary walk?

Our pram- and sling-friendly walks are designed to be gentle, social, and inclusive. We:

  • Walk together at a slow pace suitable for all ages
  • Encourage nature play and toddler exploration
  • Pause for chats, snacks, and coffee afterwards

Some walks include seasonal themes, guided meditations, or play prompts for babies and toddlers.

Can I bring older children or other family members?

Absolutely! Siblings, grandparents, partners, and friends are all welcome. Older children often bring scooters or bikes and love feeding the ducks along the way.

What if the weather is bad?

We walk in most weather — sun, rain, or mud! Please dress appropriately and bring layers.
If there’s a severe weather warning (like ice or storms), we’ll update you by email or social media.

Do I need to pay?

Walks are free or donation-based. Contributions help us cover costs and keep the walks running for everyone.
