Babywearing is an amazing way to bond with your baby, support their development, and make day-to-day parenting easier — especially when you’re juggling tasks, siblings, or just trying to get outside into nature. It’s not a secret that we’re big fans of babywearing! But with so many baby carrier types available, how do you choose the right sling for your baby?
This guide breaks down the different options – with babywearing safety at the heart of every decision.
Why Carrier Choice Matters:
Choosing the right baby carrier isn’t just about comfort — it’s about ensuring your baby’s safety, healthy development, and your own long-term wellbeing. Just like car seats and prams – slings and carriers should support your baby’s airway, spine, and hips in a developmentally appropriate way.
That’s why we always recommend using a safe, ergonomic baby carrier, ideally one that meets recognised safety certifications and fits well on both you and your child.
For general positioning tips and how to keep your baby’s airway clear, read Part 1 of our Babywearing Safety Series here.
Common Types of Baby Carriers and Slings:
1. Stretchy Wraps

Stretchy wraps are long pieces of soft, elastic fabric that you tie around your body to carry your baby. They’re especially popular in the fourth trimester, offering gentle support for newborns.
- Best for: Newborns and smaller babies
- Why choose: Soft, snuggly, and ideal for the early months
- Things to note: Can get warm in hot weather, best for front carries
- Often used in babywearing support groups and recommended by midwives
2. Buckle Carriers / SSCs (Soft Structured Carriers)

These are structured carriers with padded straps and buckles, making them quick and easy to use. Many now offer newborn-safe options with adjustable panels or inserts.
-
- Best for: Newborns (with insert) to toddlers
- Why choose: Quick and easy, great for multiple wearers
- Look for: Wide, supportive waistband and adjustable panel
- Perfect for sling library hire if you’re unsure which brand works best
3. Woven Wraps

Woven wraps are strong and supportive fabrics that don’t stretch. They can be used from newborn to preschool, with an almost unlimited range of carry options — front, hip, or back.
-
- Best for: All ages – incredibly versatile
- Why choose: You can do front, hip, and back carries as baby grows
- Note: There’s a learning curve, but many parents love the snug fit and variet
4. Meh Dai / Half Buckle

A meh dai is a panel carrier with fabric shoulder and waist ties. A half buckle has a buckle waistband and tied shoulder straps. They combine wrap comfort with buckle ease.
- Best for: Newborns and beyond
- Why choose: A great balance between wrap and buckle; ties for custom fit
5. Ring Slings

These are one-shouldered carriers made from a length of woven fabric secured through two rings. Great for quick trips and babies who like to be picked up and put down often.
- Best for: Quick up-and-down carries
- Why choose: Lightweight, one-shouldered, lovely for older babies and short trips
All of these can be safe if worn correctly — that’s where we come in. You can browse our full catalogue of baby carriers and slings on our Slings Page.
Safety Certifications to Look For:
When choosing or borrowing a sling, always check for:
- CE/UKCA mark (shows compliance with British/EU safety standards)
- ASTM or ISO certification (particularly with imported brands)
- Reputable manufacturers with clear instructions
Please note that we have seen reports of “fake” slings available on the market – if you’re in any doubt as to the safety of your carrier, or one that you’ve seen on a second hand buy-sell website – you’re welcome to message us for advice!
Safety should never be a guessing game. That’s why Parent Sanctuary offers safe sling hire and support at every step.
Which Sling is Right for Me?
There’s no “one-size-fits-all.” Your choice depends on:
- Baby’s age and stage
- Your body and any physical considerations
- How long you’ll wear your baby
- Your comfort and confidence with tying or clipping
- Your lifestyle (e.g. walks in nature, school runs, indoor use)
If you’re local, visit one of our sling library sessions in Penistone or Holmfirth — we’ll help you try different options to find the perfect fit. Our trained babywearing consultants can talk through your requirements and help you find a great fit. Then you have the choice to go and buy your own or hire one of ours – this could be on a long-term basis (hire is usually monthly), or you can “try-before-you-buy”.
